Plantation House

'A stone's throw from Ermington's crooked church spire', this cream-painted Georgian rectory (Grade II listed) has been turned by Richard and Magdalena Hendey into a small hotel. They have given it a plantation theme: public areas have black carpeting, pale walls; modern artwork, tropical plants, cane furniture, fresh flowers. The bedrooms are individually designed. A room at the top of the house has 'comfortable chairs by a sash window overlooking a hillside; attractive white cane furniture; a turquoise carpet and silk window blind'. Another visitor appreciated 'lights bright enough to read by; a state-of-the-art bathroom, but added: 'Not enough drawer space.' Dinner in the small dining room is 'an intimate affair'. Richard Hendey's 'excellent' cooking was enjoyed: 'Highlights were scallops on a brandade base; duck breast with a crispy skin, and locally shot woodcock.' Service was 'well paced; gentle background music'. Breakfast is outstanding (says an inspector): a choice of freshly squeezed juices, bowls of fresh cut fruit; 'eggs with deep amber yolks, dry-cured bacon, smoked salmon'; leaf tea, 'good' coffee. • Our main memory is of Rieccard's spectacular cooking. A stream of memorable plates of food. Not large, the place is run mainly as a restaurant-with-rooms. No public rooms beyond a small loung/bar area. Decor throughout is 'designer' to a huge degree. Our room at the top was immaculate and comfortable. A splendid bathroom. But no drawer space.

  • A wonderful place. It was our second time -- it is even better. The owner Richard Hendey is very kind, and he and his staf give you a warm welcome. You feel at home. The kitchen is very good. We can only talk in superlatives. There was nothing we didn't like.

  • We took over the hotel for the weekend for our daughter's wedding. It accommodated and catered for 18 guests comfortably. A gourmet buffet was provided on the Friday evening, and a sumptuous wedding dinner on the Saturday. Richard, the owner/chef and his staff made it a truly magical weekend. A superb location.
