The Evesham Hotel

César award in 1990

John Jenkinson, who runs this family-friendly and unashamedly eccentric hotel with his wife, Sue, has an 'inimitable' sense of humour that divides opinions. 'A national treasure, as happy and relaxing as ever,' say visitors this year. Those who don't get the joke find the humour 'puerile', and object to the 'gimmicks in the loos' (fart machines, mirrors that speak). The many fans appreciate the owner's caring side, the warm welcome, and the level of service provided by his long-serving staff. Mrs Jenkinson designs the bedrooms, many of which are themed: the Jockey Room has an interior stable door; South Pacific has an aquarium under the basin. All rooms have a silent fridge with mineral water and fresh milk. Children love the Alice in Wonderland Suite with a play nook under the beams. There is a huge playroom, an indoor swimming pool, slides and a trampoline in the garden. In the Georgian dining room, Andrea Walker's extensive menu has 'ingenious' dishes (eg, pork and pear, creamy Stilton sauce). 'I didn't know so many breakfast cereals existed.' (Jill and Mike Bennett, BL, and others)

  • A very successful visit: two adults and two grandchildren. John Jenkinson's humour was just right. He presented each child with a drinking straw one metre long, and advised them to put their drinks on the floor of the restaurant. Service was superb, JJ came to take our luggage when we arrived. The buffet lunch was exxcellenet, and excellent value. 67 cereals were on offer at breakfast! The dining room is elegant. Swimming pool comfortably warm. Our rooms were a little dated, but that didn't matter a jot.
