The Horse and Groom

César award in 2012

In a hilltop Cotswold village, this Grade II listed Georgian coaching inn is now run as a 'delightful' pub-with-rooms by brothers Tom and Will Greenstock. 'We received a sincere welcome from Tom', who manages front of house. Will is the chef, whose 'imaginative yet unpretentious' menus are served in the 'busy', 'cheerful' dining room. 'The food is of a consistently high standard, with a commitment to using locally sourced ingredients', perhaps trio of charcuterie, celeriac remoulade, home-made piccalilli; whole Cornish lemon sole, brown shrimps, Café de Paris butter. Smart, modern bedrooms 'have all the essentials'; one has views over the village, another has French doors opening on to the landscaped garden. 'Our spacious bedroom had an extremely comfortable bed; we loved the complimentary flapjack and fresh milk - such a contrast to standard hotel offerings.' Breakfast has eggs from the Greenstocks' hens, milk from the local farm, 'gorgeous, buttery croissants'; 'the yellowest butter we have ever seen'. There is no lounge, 'but you can sit comfortably and read in your bedroom'. Some road noise from the busy A44. (Jane and Stephen Marshall, and others)
  • It never disappoints. Tom Greenstock and his team worked tirelessly to ensure our stay was as near perfect as possible. The food is of a consistently high standard with an imaginative menu without pretention and a commitment to use locally sourced ingredients. The bedroom was spacious, the bed extremely comfortable, and small touches like the complimentary homemade flapjack and fresh milk such a contrast to standard hotel offerings. Above all is the sincere welcome from Tom who remembers us by name and goes out of his way to enquire after us without being intrusive.

  • A return visit. Just as delightful. Warm, friendly welcome; feeling of a well-organised establishment where everyone knows their job and gets on with it, cheerfully. Our room overlooking the garden was comfortable and well equipped. At dinner, asparagus and aubergine purée were delicious, steak was excellent, and there were real, fresh vegetables. Breakfast had eggs with strong yellow yolks, and real home-made croissants.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We arrived to a friendly welcome shortly before 3pm (you cannot check in between 3 and 6).Our deluxe double room was spacious and comfortable, with a large bathroom. Traffic was audible by day but no problem at night. Dinner included excellent pork and steak with 'real' vegetables. Breakfast had 'special' milk from a local farm, generous butter slabs, wonderful croissants; no portion control.
