On the main street of a 'nice old market town', this 16th-century former coaching inn is a hub of community life. It is managed by Catherine Feather for Victor and Marion Buchanan, who have owned the inn for 29 years. On the first and second floors of the main building, bedrooms are traditionally styled; more modern rooms are in the Hideaway, the converted stables across the open courtyard. Hotel guests have use of the Bothy, a converted barn with sofas, a wood-burning stove, complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits, newspapers and magazines, and a television; in the cosy restaurant, long-serving chef Darren Clemmit serves 'honest food'. Children are well catered for with special menus, toys, board games and colouring pens. Yorkshire breakfasts. Lounge, bar, bothy, restaurant; private dining rooms. Small terrace; 11/2-acre grounds. Free Wi-Fi. No background music. Conferences/meetings. Children (early suppers, cots, baby monitors), and dogs (in some annexe rooms) welcomed. 21 bedrooms (9 in annexe, on ground floor). Per room B&B single £119--£159, double £149--£189. D,B&B £149--£249 per person
