Montagu Arms

Two stone dogs guard the entrance to this wisteria-clad Georgian country house, in an 'attractive' village in the New Forest national park. Inside, there are oak-panelled public rooms, an old brick fireplace, a log fire in the lounge. 'We had a most enjoyable stay,' says a visitor this year. Many of the traditionally decorated bedrooms overlook Beaulieu Palace or the garden; superior rooms have a seating area. 'Our spacious, comfortable room had its own sitting room and views of the garden.' Tea or coffee is delivered to the room in the morning. In the Terrace restaurant, chef Matthew Tomkinson has a Michelin star for his cooking, which uses much local and home-grown produce. Typical dishes: slow-poached garden egg, crispy duck croquettes, spiced consommé; grilled Shetland monkfish, buttered wild asparagus, mussel risotto. 'The food matched our high expectations; much care was lavished on presentation.' Informal meals and local ales may be taken in Monty's Inn. Guests can use the SenSpa at a sister hotel, Careys Manor, in nearby Brockenhurst. 'Right next to the river walk to Buckler's Hard, which makes a pleasant outing.' (Bryan and Mary Blaxall, and others). Montagu Arms is a member of Pride of Britain hotels.

  • An impressive Georgian house in an attractive village. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The food was of a high standard with much care lavished on presentation. Service was good, though English was the second language for the largely French staff.

  • Four wonderful nights. The barman and the head waiter always spoke to us by name, providing a very personal service. The ambience is just right for Christmas ,and the food was a pleasure to eat.The hotel has its own hens and the breakfast eggs were a joy to eat.

  • Beautiful old building well positioned in a lovely village. Friendly, welcoming staff. We were upgraded to a superior room overlooking the garden. It was OK but too small for the amount of furniture in it. Dinner was excellent in the Michelin-starred restaurant. I had grilled mackerel as a starter and venison as a main. My wife had rabbit cannelloni and duck. Perfectly cooked and generous portions. The poached pear dessert recommended was also excellent.
