The Felin Fach Griffin

César award: Welsh inn of the

'An extraordinary haven in a storm for a family depressed by a week's exceptionally damp camping holiday.' This old inn on the road between the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains is managed by Julie Bell for brothers Charles and Edmund Inkin. 'I cannot sing its praises enough,' said a visitor this year. 'They dried our wet stuff in the boiler room, fed our four-year-old beans on toast and strawberry ice cream in the bar; added fish and chips to the menu for the older boys; re-laid our table with candles and dessert for two after we'd put the offspring to bed.' Two of the simple 'but well-designed' bedrooms have been redecorated and given a new bathroom this year. All have a Roberts radio, fresh flowers. The inn's organic kitchen garden provides chef Ross Bruce with ingredients for his modern menus (dishes like monkfish fricassée, roasted new potatoes, crème fraîche). 'Breakfast with a dog at our toes and Aga toast on the table sent us off in an entirely cheerful frame of mind.' The brothers also own The Gurnard's Head, Zennor (see entry) and manage The Old Coastguard, Mousehole (see Shortlist).. (Sophie Harrowes)
  • The Felin Fach Griffin provided the most extraordinary haven in a storm - literally, for a family depressed by a week's exceptionally damp camping holiday. I cannot sing its praises high enough - wonderful rooms, fabulous food, comfortable and just ridiculously welcoming (and with an excellent selection of both gin and beer behind the bar, and a delicious Pedro Ximenez sherry post-dinner). They dried our wet stuff in the boiler room, fed our four-year-old beans on toast and strawberry ice cream in the bar at 5.30pm, added fish and chips to the menu for the boys and relaid our table with candles and dessert for two after we'd put all offspring to bed. Breakfast at the communal table, with a dog by our toes and toast on the Aga sent us all off to continue our camping trip in an entirely cheerful frame of mind. Our stay remains a precious memory to all of us. And of course it is in the most beautiful part of the world - even in a rain storm.
