Stock Hill House

In 'lovely' landscaped grounds with 'huge' trees, lawns and flowerbeds, this imposing late Victorian house (once the summer home of cartoonist Osbert Lancaster) has long been run as a small hotel/restaurant by Nita and Peter Hauser. One of the two lounges is decorated in period style with stripped fabrics, a gilded mirror, Chinese figurines; the other, informal, has a log fire. Service is formal in the dining room, which faces the garden. Mr Hauser's daily-changing menu has English/French dishes with touches of his native Austria. It might include poached field mushroom ravioli, sweet red pepper coulis; escalope of beef rostbraten, onion and sour cream. Fish and shellfish come from the Dorset coast, vegetables and herbs from the walled kitchen garden. Vegetarians have an extensive menu. Bedrooms are individually decorated in eclectic style; they have 'good bed and bedding', antiques, curios, dark wood furniture, rich furnishings and fabrics in bold designs. An original Lancaster cartoon hangs in the breakfast room. Guests are encouraged to explore the gardens to 'guess what will be next on the menu'. More reports, please.
  • Why do we keep going back? Over 37 years we have followed Peter and Nita Hauser’s journey in the hotel industry, from their early days in Sark to the present day in Dorset. Along with every other guest we are made to feel so welcome by Nita and her front of house staff. The cuisine is delicious, and Dorset and the surrounding counties has much to explore. Breakfasts offer fresh juices and fruits, homemade yogurts, muesli and cereals followed by full English or fish, toast and homemade marmalade and preserves. For the evening menu, varied every day, the produce used by Peter is of the finest quality, and his delicate touch enhances its qualities.

  • I have stayed over many years and am impressed that standards are as immaculate now as on my first visit. The restaurant menu goes from strength to strength with a splendid choice of the tried and tested and more innovative dishes. Service in both the hotel and restaurant is superb.
