Glenfinnan House

In 'well-kept' gardens on the shores of Loch Shiel, this handsome Victorian mansion is a 'lovely traditional hotel', say Guide inspectors in 2011. 'We were well looked after in a modest but friendly Highland way. The greeting was warm from all the staff we met.' Jane MacFarlane-Glasow is the owner; Manja and Duncan Gibson are the 'pleasant' managers. 'Our bedroom was comfortably furnished, and had plenty of storage space, a fine tea tray with upmarket biscuits, lots of information about the area. The large bathroom had good shelf space, a huge bath, fluffy towels.' No key ('we think of this as a Highland home'); one can be provided if required. Chef Duncan Gibson's traditional Scottish meals (with a French twist) can be taken in the dining room or the bar. 'We enjoyed large helpings of scallops and razor clams; a nicely cooked shank of venison and Aberdeen Angus steak; discreet harp music in the background did not intrude.' Breakfast has 'plenty of choice of well-presented cooked dishes; lots of hot toast and delicious home-made marmalade and jam'. Children are welcomed.

  • The strengths of this hotel are its beautiful location and the welcoming public rooms with log fires. Disappointing small family room (11). Dinner was average, the cooked breakfast is wonderful.
