Culdearn House

On the edge of a picturesque market town popular with skiers at Aviemore, this 'delightful' but 'unassuming' Victorian house is 'warm and cosy'. It is run by 'charming' William Marshall and his wife, Sonia, 'a very good cook'. The setting, adjoining Anagach Woods, is 'peaceful'. A visitor liked the welcome 'with tea' in the wood-panelled lounge, which has a log fire, 'lots of armchairs and sofas' and a choice of 50 malt whiskies. 'I was given a whole lemon tart to myself.' Bedrooms, decorated individually with modern furniture and antiques, are 'charming and thoughtfully done'; most are spacious; bath/shower rooms are 'immaculate'. The four-course dinner menu changes daily and is served by candlelight. Readers have admired the 'thoughtful combinations', eg, loin of Morayshire lamb, port and plum jus. 'The food is excellent, especially the meat; plentiful vegetables.' Breakfast includes 'outstanding' warm fruit compote, 'porridge, delicious potato scones', and lots of cooked dishes. The Marshalls, who 'know the area well', will guide visitors to local attractions; fishing and, with enough notice, shooting can be arranged. (MB, and others)
  • A return visit to find things just as good as before.
