'Everything about this country house hotel is a class act: the location above Rutland Water, the decor, the service and the food and wine.' There is much praise from regular correspondents this year for Tim and Stefa Hart's luxury hotel (Relais & Châteaux), an imposing Victorian mansion. 'Our favourite; a benchmark against which we judge others,' say returning visitors. Mrs Hart is responsible for the interiors (the style is classic - fine fabrics, antiques, 'sumptuous' sofas and cushions). This year she has renovated the restaurant (with golden damask on the walls) and the bar (better lighting, more sparkle). The chef, Aaron Patterson, has a Michelin star for his classic cooking with modern touches (eg, sautéed langoustines, braised belly pork, rhubarb; hare Wellington, prune and Armagnac sauce). 'An excellent meal; faultless service.' The spacious bedrooms have a variety of styles; some have a floral decor; others a half-tester bed; the best overlook Rutland Water.   • This remains our favourite all-time hotel. We have been going for one or two nights a year for 20 years and the location, condition of the hotel, food, rooms and service are all excellent. The result is a faultless experience and one that we look forward to repeating at regular intervals.
