A recent visitor could not fault the 'atmosphere and sheer enjoyment' Glyn and Jacqueline Roberts have created at their personally run restaurant-with-rooms near the castle. In this 17th-century inn, old beams and oak flooring are combined with modern leather seating and contemporary Welsh art. Bedrooms have colourful headboards and cushions. A champion of local producers, Mr Roberts cooks seasonal dishes, including a daily special. Canapés are served in the bar before dinner. Lounge bar, restaurant. Wi-Fi (in bar and lounge).   • We were impressed. The setting on slopes above the river is amazing, with wide views. Our superior deluxe room was wonderful, done in modern style, with underfloor heating in the bathroom. The food was excellent, with some imaginative flavours, quite large portions.
