The Pier at Harwich

'A great place in a lovely spot', Paul Milsom's hotel/restaurant is a conversion of two historic buildings on the quayside of this busy port. Visitors this year 'were impressed with the staff in both restaurant and hotel'. 'A good place to eat and stay,' is another comment. The main building once accommodated European ferry passengers; the other is the former Angel pub, built in the 17th century. Seven of the bedrooms and the two restaurants (the Harbourside and the Ha'Penny Bistro) are in the main building; the other bedrooms and a beamed lounge are in the pub. 'We stayed in the Mayflower Suite, a large room with a telescope for the splendid views; a good bathroom.' The Harbourside restaurant, on the first floor, has a minimalist decor, a polished pewter champagne bar. 'Full marks to the chef.' Seafood is the speciality of Chris Oakley, whose menus might include roast monkfish in pancetta, caper and prawn linguini. The ground-floor bistro serves simpler fare. Mr Milsom also owns Le Talbooth restaurant in Dedham and two hotels: milsoms, and Maison Talbooth. (Gordon Murray, Lynn Wildgoose)
