Black Rock House

This restored Victorian villa is on a side street, a 'steepish climb' up from the seafront. It has 'flamboyant turrets, handsome window casings, neatly clipped bay trees standing sentinel by the front entrance'. A stylish sitting room, with an open fire, has an honesty bar; drinks can be taken to a south-facing terrace. The five bedrooms are individually designed in contemporary colours. Braybrooke, in shades of grey, has a high ceiling and original mouldings; a marble wet room with a waterfall shower. The 'handsome' Garden Room, in a mix of browns and creams, has an 'opulent' bed, freestanding dark wood furnishings. Breakfast is served in a 'light and elegant' dining room.. As we went to press we learned that Black Rock House had changed hands. We would welcome reports on the new regime. Some of the details on the right may no longer be accurate.

  • A delightful and relaxing place. The house was immaculate. The lounge was warm and inviting. In the adjoining breakfast room, tables were beautifully laid. The honesty bar had good choice and reasonable prices. Our turret room faced the sea and had a restrained modern look. The lighting was excellent. The huge bathroom was splendid. Every detail was thought of (fresh milk in a fridge, torch, free Wi-Fi, etc). Breakfast, served until 10 (11 at weekends), was just right: small buffet, freshly squeezed juice, delicious home-made jam, chinky toast, excellent cooked dishes.
