Swan House

Two minutes' walk from the seafront, in the interesting older part of Hastings, this white-painted, black-beamed cottage dates back to 1490. It is run as an upmarket B&B by 'thoughtful' host, Brendan McDonagh, and his partner, Lionel Copley. 'Brendan supplied tea and biscuits free of charge to friends who came to visit us.' The bedrooms are individually styled in muted colours. There are large beds and a mix of modern and vintage furniture. 'Our stay was extremely comfortable,' says a visitor this year. 'Our room, Renaissance, was large and light, with a small terrace. It had a big squashy sofa, and iPod dock; high-quality toiletries in the shower.' A smaller ground-floor room in a Victorian extension is 'good for people who cannot manage the stairs'. The house is filled with curios and antiques collected by the owners. Breakfast has Greek yogurt with prunes and honey; kippers and haddock come from Peter's Eastern Fish Shop in the old town. 'A bonus is the two delightful dogs, Daisy and Matilda.' A sister guest house, The Old Rectory, is in a nearby 18th-century building. (Pat Woodward)
  • Our stay was extremely comfortable. Renaissance Room was large, with a small terrace. Ground-floor room smaller and rather dark. Two delightful dogs, Daisy and Myrtle.
