The setting is the 'greatest attraction' of the only hotel on this 'beautiful car-free island which you can walk around comfortably in half a day'. Siôn Dobson Jones is the manager; 'all the staff are friendly and efficient'. The island has cliffs, beaches, a little harbour, an inn and a 10th-century chapel; guests arrive by ferry (a tractor transports luggage from the quay). Refurbishment of the bedrooms continues; visitors this year who found their bedroom 'utilitarian' liked the modern bathroom. There is no television, clock or telephones in the rooms ('they don't seem appropriate on Herm'). Some rooms are in cottages in the grounds. Children are welcomed: high teas, family suites with a second bedroom, baby listening. In the formal conservatory restaurant (jacket and tie required for men), chef Nigel Waylen's daily-changing menus might include chilled poached salmon, cucumber noodles; honey-roast breast of duck, roasted sweet potato, red wine jus. No background music. There are no dress or age restrictions in the Ship Inn brasserie. Much to do: tennis, croquet, a solar-heated swimming pool.
