The White House

César award in 1987

'Enthusiastically endorsed' by visitors who have known it for many years, this is the only hotel on the privately owned, car-free island. Radios are barred from its beaches; tranquillity also reigns in the hotel - no clocks, televisions or telephones in the bedrooms; no background music. Siôn Dobson Jones, the manager, leads a 'young international crew'. Luggage is transported by tractor from the quay. Many rooms have been refurbished this year. 'Ours was bright and clean; French windows led to a private balcony.' Children are welcomed: there are family rooms and baby-listening. Under-nines are 'encouraged' to take high tea, but may join their parents for dinner in the formal restaurant (men are asked to wear a jacket and tie). The cooking of chef Nigel Waylen is 'excellent, dishes well presented'. His daily-changing menu might include salad of smoked chicken; sea bass, parsley potatoes, crab beurre blanc. In the grounds are tennis, croquet and a solar-heated swimming pool. Good walking on the island with recently opened paths through woodland. (N and JJ)
