Underleigh House

In an idyllic setting outside a village within the Peak District national park, Vivienne and Philip Taylor's B&B is in a conversion of a Victorian cottage and barn. It is much liked for the good value and their 'generous' hospitality. There is good walking from the door: the Taylors will provide advice on the best walks, a packed lunch, and a complimentary tray of tea and cakes to returning walkers (waterproofs will be dried). The bedrooms, which vary in size, are comprehensively equipped: they have tea- and coffee-making facilities, a silent mini-fridge and a well-written information pack. The first-floor Derwent Suite faces the rear garden and has an adjoining lounge with dual-aspect windows. Shatton, accessed via a passageway from the guest lounge, is on the ground floor and has a glazed door which leads directly to the garden. The award-winning breakfast, served communally in a beamed and flagstoned room, has home-made granary bread, Aga-cooked porridge, unusual fruit compotes (such as sliced mango with lemon and Calvados), free-range eggs and locally made sausages and black pudding. Advice is given on restaurants and pubs; bookings will be made. (JF)
  • Excellent value for money, the rooms were everything said on the website. We were made very welcome when we arrived and enjoyed the afternoon tea offered.
