Underleigh House

In a 'beautiful' setting, on a private lane, outside a Domesday-old village, Vivienne and Philip Taylor's B&B is 'excellent value for money', says a visitor in 2013. 'We were made very welcome, and greatly enjoyed the afternoon tea.' The long, low, creeper-covered building is a conversion of a 19th-century barn and cottage. The 'well-fitted' bedrooms vary in size (some are small). The Thornhill Suite has a bedroom with a round window overlooking the valley, an adjoining lounge with a stable door opening on to a stone staircase to the garden. Townhead, on the ground floor, has glazed doors on two sides, one of which faces the rose garden. All rooms have a comprehensive information pack, bottled water, fresh fruit, tea- and coffee-making equipment. The prize-winning breakfast is taken communally at a long oak table in a room with a beamed ceiling and flagstone floor. There is home-made bread, preserves made by Philip Taylor (perhaps apricot and amaretto), and a wide range of cooked dishes. The Taylors are happy to advise on the excellent walking locally. 'They took trouble to make a dinner reservation for us.' (Jenny Ferguson)
  • Excellent value for money, the rooms were everything said on the website. We were made very welcome when we arrived and enjoyed the afternoon tea offered.
