The Old Bridge

A Master of Wine, John Hoskins runs a wine shop within his creeper-clad 18th-century town house hotel, which stands by a medieval bridge over the River Ouse. 'Currently on very good form,' say visitors this year, who choose to stay even though they live nearby. Nina Beaumond is the manager. In the large, light Terrace restaurant (with an oval cupola), James Haydon is now the chef. His monthly-changing menu of modern and traditional dishes might include linguini with Dorset crab; saddle of lamb, rösti, baby turnips, Madeira and thyme sauce. Unsurprisingly, the wine list is thought good value (30 wines are available by the glass). The bedrooms, individually designed in contemporary style by Julia Hoskins, are 'well thought out'. An earlier comment: 'Even the smallest double was impeccably kitted out; a very good bathroom.' The building is hedged by a busy traffic system; bedrooms are triple glazed and have air conditioning.
