'Strongly recommended' again in 2009, this 15th-century building is 'beautifully situated' next to a remaining fragment of an 11th-century abbey. 'A warm welcome, comfortable stay and excellent breakfast,' say visitors. The owners, Jonathan and Maureen Cooke, are regularly praised for their 'kindness and friendliness'. They run their guest house 'impeccably', yet 'find time to chat'. There are flagstone floors, panelled doors, original windows; a 'cosy lounge with plenty of books'; 'lots of chintz and knick-knacks'. Light lunches and cream teas are served in summer in the 'lovely large garden'; it has flowerbeds in wide lawns that slope down to a millpond. Beyond is Abbotsbury's huge, ancient tithe barn. The 'cottagey' bedrooms vary in size and style: 'Ours, inside the main roof gable on the second floor, had a sitting area and a big brass bed; good, modern TV.' 'Views from the rooms were over rolling countryside towards the sea.' 'Watch your head in an attic room.' Breakfast, served with damask tablecloths, has a cold buffet, 'croissants worth a mention', and a wide choice of cooked dishes using local produce. Evening meals are available only for house parties, but Abbey House has a comprehensive list of local eating places. The village is famed for its ancient swannery and its subtropical gardens.
