'Wholeheartedly endorsed' again this year, this bright blue hotel is 'superbly located' on the quay of a 'delightful' small west Wales town. It has a 'real buzz, combining local pub with restaurant and rooms'. The bilingual owners, Glyn and Menna Heulyn, are 'very hands on', say fans, and their 'good, hard-working team' is 'friendly and helpful'. The recently expanded bar is thought 'a big improvement; spacious, with different types of seating, from comfy sofas to high bar stools'. Meals are available here (eg, smoked haddock and cockle chowder; steak and kidney pie). A new chef, Scott Davis, has recently arrived. He uses local meat and seafood for modern dishes like herb-crusted cod, crushed potatoes. We'd welcome reports on his cooking. The Georgian building has been 'brilliantly updated' in modern yet locally sympathetic fashion. All bedrooms have views. 'Our lovely room was filled with things that were a pleasure to use.' 'Ours had a squashy sofa on which to crash out and stare at boats and the sea. It was peaceful, while plenty of bustling went on below. Outstanding breakfast.' The cottage two doors down, also overlooking the harbour, and where children under five may stay, is 'well furnished and equipped'. (LM Mayer-Jones, Lynn Wildgoose)
