Gwesty Cymru

Review

On Aberystwyth's Victorian seafront promenade, this Grade II listed Georgian terrace house is run as a restaurant-with-rooms by owners Huw and Beth Roberts. They have converted it 'with sympathy and flair', say inspectors, who 'thoroughly enjoyed' their stay. 'Judicious use has been made of Welsh materials': slate; furniture handmade from Welsh oak; oil paintings by local artists. In the restaurant, Tim Morris provided a 'first-class dinner at a reasonable price'. Typical dishes ('with a Welsh twist'): seared king scallops with black pudding, celeriac mash; cannon of Ystwyth valley lamb in an amaretti crust with bubble and squeak. 'The staff were without exception both friendly and efficient.' The bedrooms are 'well equipped'; those in the eaves are 'a long climb'; some, above the kitchen, might be warm, and bedside lighting may be 'inadequate'. No guest lounge: guests may sit in the cellar bar, and the restaurant's sea-facing terrace provides outdoor drinking and dining in good weather.
