Lovelady Shield

Review

Set peacefully among trees on the banks of the River Nent, this 'grand old house' (white-fronted and Georgian) stands on the site of a 13th-century convent. It has long been run as a small hotel/restaurant by owners Peter and Marie Haynes, who live in a cottage in the grounds. Visitors like the silence, both in the grounds (no traffic noise) and the house, which is 'blissfully free of muzak'. 'Service is eager but relaxed,' say visitors this year. Guests have the use of a sitting room with open fire, and a small library 'full of books and games for rainy days'. Bedrooms are 'comfortably furnished'; Room 9 has a four-poster bed and a separate seating area with a settee. Some rooms are small. Barrie Garton, the chef for almost 20 years, describes his style as 'British with continental excursions'. His daily-changing four-course table d'hôte menu might include tiger prawn wonton, avocado purée; slow-braised blade of beef, reversed cauliflower cheese. An 'excellent' breakfast has 'lots of choice'. There is good walking from the door. Guests at three self-catering cottages in the grounds can use the hotel facilities. (Claire and David Stevens)
