The Regent by the Lake

Review

'We enjoyed being made to feel like part of a family.' 'A thoroughly reliable, reasonably priced hotel.' Praise this year for this white-fronted building opposite a slipway on to Lake Windermere, near this picturesque village. Owned by Christine Hewitt, it is managed by her son, Andrew. The public rooms have a modern decor of pale browns and cream. Bedrooms 'come in all shapes and sizes'. 'Our sail loft room had a wonderful view of the lake from its own private terrace, and a secluded feeling.' Some rooms, if `'fairly small', are 'comfortable and well equipped'. A courtyard room was 'packed with wonderful features including music centre and DVD-player; its modern bathroom had a spa bath'. These rooms are recommended for children (near the swimming pool) and for dogs: both are welcomed ('special requests and diets no problem'). In the split-level restaurant, the daily-changing menus of chef John Mathers are commended: 'Our favourite dish was frittata of Mediterranean vegetables, roast garlic and cherry tomato, served with mixed leaves.' Breakfast, served until midday, is 'varied and innovative: notable scrambled egg laced with bacon; wide choice of omelettes'. 'By jingo, the kippers were good.' (Frank G Millen, Simon Rodway, David EW Jervois, GM)
