The Traddock

Review

In a pretty village in the Yorkshire Dales national park, this substantial stone-built Georgian house is run by two generations of the Reynolds family. Bruce and Jane Reynolds are gradually handing over to their son, Paul, and his wife, Jenny. A programme of 'rolling redecoration' has seen the addition of two bedrooms this year; some older bathrooms have been upgraded. One visitor wrote of 'blazing log fires in the public rooms' and a 'cosy, welcoming feel'. The bedrooms are 'comfortably furnished in restrained country style' (patterned wallpaper, plain fitted carpets, 'fine country antiques'), and have magazines, fresh milk, home-made biscuits . 'Ours had pleasantly faded elegance, comfort married to good taste.' The food, 'wherever possible' organic, is sourced locally, almost all from within a 50-mile radius. There were mixed reports on dinner: 'A really good venison pudding but an over-sweet white chocolate and raspberry soufflé.' Breakfasts, however, were 'outstanding': a 'wide and lavish choice' (porridge, eggs Benedict, kippers, smoothies and much else). 'Great walking from the door' - this is Wainwright country.
