Corrour House

Review

Set in beautiful grounds, this 'delightful' bay-windowed former dower house of the Rothiemurchus estate has 'outstanding' views across to the Lairig Ghru pass and the Cairngorms. The owners, Carol and Robert Still, 'take immense trouble to make sure that guests have all they need, and to give them information about the neighbourhood', says a visitor this year. Tea and shortbread are offered on arrival. An earlier guest wrote of 'a house of real antique character, scrupulously maintained'. The public rooms are 'beautifully decorated': the lounge, where an open fire burns much of the time, has been refurbished. Bedrooms vary in size and are 'lovely' and 'chintzy'. 'The bathroom was well equipped.' An evening meal is no longer available, but there are plenty of eating places nearby. 'A very good breakfast' is taken in a 'stunning' room. You might see red squirrels, deer or even a pine marten crossing the lawn. Aviemore is ten minutes away on foot, and there is 'much good walking in the area'. (Mary Hewson, AM)
