Hartwell House

Review

'Exquisite in 18th-century pastoral style', this magnificent stately home is run as a luxury hotel by Historic House Hotels on behalf of the National Trust, which acquired it in autumn 2008 thanks to the generous donation by Richard Broyd (see also Middlethorpe Hall & Spa, York, Bodysgallen Hall & Spa, Llandudno, Wales). The Trust will receive all profits. The long-serving, 'charming' director/general manager, Jonathan Thompson, continues to 'keep an eagle eye on everything'. 'Service just right: you are a welcome guest in their country house which they treasure.' Another comment: 'The place is stunning, the food wonderful.' The house is 'beautifully restored', and has 'all mod cons'. The four 'elegant' drawing rooms are furnished with 'priceless antiques, there to be used, not just admired'. There are 'roaring log fires' and 'friendly staff'. Air conditioning has been installed in many bedrooms, and all have a flat-screen TV. The rooms in the main house are large and 'well furnished', and have 'wonderful views'. Those in a 'sensitively' converted stable block are 'attractively decorated' (some are split-level). The dress code for the 'excellent' dinner, provided by Daniel Richardson and served by candlelight with silver and damask, is smart casual (jacket and tie not obligatory). There is a café and bar in the spa. (William Pedder, Hugo Peate)
