Cairn Bay Lodge

Review

'Excellent, a relaxing break,' writes a visitor this year to the white, pebble-dashed home of Chris and Jenny Mullen and their young daughters, Poppy and Daisy. It has a 'fantastic position' on Ballyholme Bay. 'After trying the noisy hotels in the town centre, I was pleased to find this tranquil B&B. The attentive hosts do not intrude on your privacy.' Other visitors enjoyed the 'friendly welcome' and their 'good-sized room with a view over the bay'. The bedrooms have an 'imaginative tea tray; cake left outside'. The lounge also has bay views. The 'exceptional' breakfast, served in an oak-panelled room, is 'the highlight: home-made wheaten bread, fruit juices; in addition to the usual fry-up, we enjoyed a smoked salmon omelette (duck eggs) with soda bread, and, pièce de résistance, Irish goat's cheese with mushrooms and tomatoes'. The off-street parking is appreciated, too. Jenny Mullen, a beauty therapist, gives treatments in her salon. (Graham Smith, Sheelagh Dunk, Dermot K Stewart)
