'From the moment we walked through the door (held open for us), we knew that Apsley House was special.' More praise this year for this 'elegant' Georgian house, built by the Duke of Wellington in 1830 for his mistress. 'Charming, with the luxurious feel of a hotel,' said earlier visitors. Owned by Nicholas and Claire Potts, the guest house is managed by the 'smart, friendly' Duncan and Anél Neville. Furnished with fine antiques and paintings, it is a 'pleasant 20-minute walk in to town'. The 'delightful' lounge has 'a coal fire that is hard to resist', and an honesty bar. 'We stayed in the Wellington room, slightly more expensive but worth it for the beautiful views of Bath from our window and the luxurious super-king-size bed.' Two rooms can make a family suite. On the ground floor, a newly redecorated four-poster room with walk-in shower is suitable for visitors with limited mobility. A coach house has been turned into an apartment for families. Breakfast has fresh fruit, marmalade in a jar, and 'Duncan's cooked feasts' (eg, pancakes with maple syrup). Soup and sandwiches can be provided, and a light supper is available by arrangement during the week in the quieter months. (Tricia and Neil Clark, and others)
