The Mount

Review

In a 'great location' near the town centre and the quay where fishing boats unload their catches by the medieval bridge, this B&B is owned and run by Andrew and Heather Laugharne. 'They are warm and accommodating,' says a visitor this year. The imposing Georgian house is 'charming, light and airy; lovely decorative touches make it feel homely and welcoming', writes another. The public areas have bright colours; red walls to the white-painted, winding staircase, pink in the lounge (which has an open fire and a licence to sell alcohol), blue in the room where the 'fantastic' breakfasts 'using lots of local produce' are served ('the bacon and sausages are particularly good'). 'Everything is spotlessly clean' in the spacious bedrooms (two have been redecorated this year). 'The bed in my room was so comfortable, it was difficult to leave.' Guests have access to the pretty, partly walled garden. Discounts are available at the Royal North Devon Golf Club. Guests arriving by train can be met at Barnstaple. (Cynthia Ritchie, J Rixson)
