The Old Rectory

Review

Thomas Hardy met his future wife Emma Gifford, the rector's sister-in-law, here in 1870. It appears as Endelstow Vicarage in his novel A Pair of Blue Eyes. Now it is a B&B, run by the 'welcoming' owners, Chris and Sally Searle, who stress that (unlike in some B&Bs) visitors may come and go throughout the day. Its comfortable guests' sitting room, with fireplace, looks over the terrace and the attractive south-facing garden. Three bedrooms are in the main house. The Rector's has a super-king-size bed, 'luxury' whirlpool bath and views of the garden, Mr Hardy's has an antique carved double bed and a power shower, Emma's has a large shower and the original thunderbox loo. The fourth room, Old Stables, has its own entrance and is linked to the main house by a conservatory; it has a wood-burning stove, a sofa bed, and both bath and shower. Breakfast, served until 10 am (or in bed until midday), has fresh fruit from the garden, local apple juice, free-range chicken and duck eggs, bacon and sausages from Tintagel; other cooked dishes include Cornish rarebit; kippers; French toast with fruit compote. More reports, please.
