The White Horse

Review

On the sea marsh side of a village in north Norfolk, Cliff Nye's informal inn (managed by Kevin Nobes) is liked for its 'relaxed' style. There are panoramic views across the tidal marshes from the conservatory restaurant and terrace. The open-plan interior has a contemporary rustic style; Lloyd Loom chairs in the lounges, scrubbed pine wooden tables and chairs in the restaurant. Eight of the bedrooms are in a grass-roofed annexe built into the contours of the garden; each has a terrace which provides separate access. These rooms are popular with walkers (the Coast Path runs along the bottom of the garden) and dog owners. There are spacious bedrooms upstairs in the pub; the split-level Room at the Top (£15 supplement) has a viewing balcony with telescope. Some rooms have a sofa bed; all have Wi-Fi. Rene Llupar joined as chef in 2009. His new daily-changing menu 'celebrates' local produce. Fishermen in the village deliver their catch of the day and 'Cyril's mussels' come from beds at the bottom of the garden. Dishes include medallions of monkfish with aubergine caviar; baked cod with pancetta, broad beans, peas and baby leeks. Children have their own menu (and colouring books and crayons in the lounge); there is a separate menu in the bar (frequented by locals). Breakfast is served until 11 am. (RM, and others)
