Ty Mawr

Review

'A delightful, hard-working couple', Annabel Viney and Stephen Thomas, run this 16th-century farmhouse as a country hotel and restaurant. In a village on the edge of the Brechfa forest, it is a 'very relaxing place', that provides 'good value'. 'They could not have been more helpful' to a wheelchair-user this year. The host is the chef, providing 'good bistro-style cooking', using seasonal ingredients from a large network of nearby suppliers. The hostess ('intelligent, responsive and helpful') 'uses a curious system which enables the guests to enjoy a different menu each day'. 'The food was a delight.' Try the coracle-caught sewin with a cucumber sauce, or griddled Welsh lamb chops on a chestnut and leek gravy. 'Breakfasts were good, too.' An inspector found both the house, with its original thick stone walls, fireplaces and beams, and the grounds attractive. And the bedrooms are liked: 'Ours was fairly plain, but very comfortable. It had two chairs (so often a double has only one). In perfect weather, we sat on the patio with our drinks, watching the river.' 'Good lighting.' The micro-brewery has been turned into a new 'superior' bedroom. Wi-Fi is available.
