Named after Gordon Russell, the celebrated furniture designer who once used it as his headquarters, this restaurant-with-rooms is on the wide main street of this honey-stoned Cotswold village. The owners, Barry Hancox and Andrew Riley, have given it a chic, contemporary look: original features (beams, inglenook fireplaces, an oak staircase) were retained while modern gadgets and paintings were added. The L-shaped bistro-style dining room is 'stylish; china, glass, all top quality, modern cutlery', wooden tables with grey slate mats. A visitor returning in 2009 was again enthusiastic about the 'high standards of service, comfort and food'. Earlier comments: 'Our beautiful bedroom (No. 4), on two levels, was exciting and comfortable. Plenty of space and colour, large double bed, two comfortable armchairs, a window on almost every wall: light flooded in during the day.' Some rooms face the village, but windows are double glazed, and 'all is quiet at night'; a supermarket car park is visible from the rear windows and patio. 'Dinners were first class.' Matthew Laughton serves a seasonal set menu at midday and from 6 to 7 pm; later, guests eat à la carte. The style is modern, eg, crispy fishcake with a cress salad; spiced lamb meatball, with chorizo, spinach and artichoke pizza. Staff are 'friendly, efficient'. There is a 'parasol-covered patio with metal chairs and tables'. (Tom Mann)
