Trout at Tadpole Bridge

Review

'Idyllically located', by a bridge, on the Thames as it meanders through the Cotswolds, this 17th-century stone inn is run as an informal pub-with-rooms by its 'efficient, friendly' owners, Gareth and Helen Pugh. Its bar is popular with locals and boating visitors; six private moorings are free if you dine in the restaurant. The atmosphere is informal and the decor is 'unfussy': contemporary colour schemes combined with traditional materials. Parents of young children themselves, the Pughs welcome families of all ages, with games and toys, and a children's menu. The 'immaculate' bedrooms (all different) have flat-screen digital TV, DVD/CD-player and quality toiletries, and there is free Wi-Fi throughout. Pascal Clavaud is now the chef: his seasonal menu includes locally sourced produce, perhaps salad of smoked eel, Noilly Prat jelly; Kelmscott fillet of pork, parsnip purée, black pudding. 'Excellent breakfast': fresh orange juice, home-made bread, a 'well-stocked' sideboard; kippers and haddock among the cooked choice. Guests can hire a small electric punt for picnics on the river. Check in before 3 pm or after 6 pm. More reports, please.
