Downderry House

Review

On the outskirts of a seaside resort in an area of outstanding natural beauty, this detached 1920s house has been renovated as a luxury B&B by Don and Amanda Clarke. 'They are friendly but not intrusive hosts,' say visitors this year. 'It is more like a boutique hotel than a B&B.' The drawing room, for the exclusive use of guests, has an honesty bar; no background music. 'Our large top-floor bedroom, Tipton, had a king-size bed, a bathroom with a separate shower; extras included a decanter of sherry.' Sidbury, a ground-floor room, has a sitting area with a leather sofa, a bathroom with a walk-in deluge shower, and a private terrace. 'A top-class breakfast is taken at separate tables in the lovely dining room overlooking the garden.' On warm days, guests are encouraged to sit in the garden or play croquet. A room-service supper menu is available. (Tracy Hoggarth)
