A new greenhouse provides fruit and vegetables for the 'exceptionally good' cooking at this 17th-century stone house in a 'wonderful' setting, high on wooded hills in the Snowdonia national park. It is popular with walkers. 'If you want a really peaceful location, this is for you,' one visitor writes. The 'highly professional' owners, Peter and Janet Pitman, and their 'charming' daughter, Kelly, run it as a guest house, without other help. Perhaps because of this, it has 'strict rules' (say inspectors): breakfast is between 8 and 9 am, dinner at 7.30 pm. 'Very comfortable' bedrooms, in muted shades, have flat-screen TV, DVD/CD-player. Some have a 'magnificent view' of the valley; one has a four-poster bed; two (one, the junior suite, is a converted hayloft) have their own external entrance. There are 'spacious, well-equipped' bathrooms. Mrs Pitman's modern dishes use organic ingredients in a daily-changing menu with two choices for each course, eg, turbot with smoked salmon open lasagne, watercress cappuccino; tandoori-style loin of Welsh mountain lamb, masala and spinach potato. 'Food cooked with passion and elegance, so good it is not to be missed.' A car is essential, the Pitmans warn. (GH, CC, and others)
