Stuart and Susannah Macpherson 'continue to improve' their Grade A listed Regency hunting lodge in large gardens outside a Highland village. Chris McLeod, the 'hard-working' manager, and his staff are 'unendingly helpful'. 'As we parked the car, he came out to welcome us,' said a returning visitor. The house has 'particularly attractive public rooms' (plaster ceilings, log fires). The stone terrace, which has 'stunning' views of the Strathconon valley, is a 'lovely place to sit with a drink'. In the high-ceilinged, octagonal dining room, with its full-height windows, Garry Kenley's contemporary Scottish cooking was thought 'good', though sometimes 'with too many ingredients' in dishes like goose breast with an oriental sweet and sour glaze, Parma ham and potato tart, turnip, sour apple purée, red cabbage jus. 'A good choice of desserts, particularly the ice creams and sorbets.' There is a separate vegetarian menu. The bedrooms, individually decorated, are 'clean, comfortable, with good pillows' (some have a four-poster). 'Our bathroom was small but had a heated towel rail and good toiletries.' Breakfast has a wide selection of cereals, bread, etc; the usual choices on the cooked menu. 'A quiet, pleasant location. Our Labrador was made very welcome; she was able to join us in the lounge after dinner.' (ST, and others)
