Review

'Beautifully set' in mature parkland on a broad sweep of the River Usk, this 19th-century Italianate building is run as a smart sporting hotel by Susie and James Suter (the third generation of the family owners) with her parents, Mr and Mrs Brabner. 'Though the grey stone exterior is a little gloomy, light floods in through enormous windows,' said a reporter this year. Earlier praise: 'The comfort and peacefulness of the house, combined with the unaffected approach, made our stay memorable.' There are attractive indoor sitting areas, particularly the conservatory with its view down the valley. Most of the 'well-appointed, comfortable and homely' bedrooms are large; the best have a balcony overlooking the river. 'The view from our room made the journey worthwhile.' Gliffaes subscribes to the Slow Food Movement, sourcing 65 per cent of ingredients from within 75 miles. Chef Carl Cheetham's cooking is 'excellent, well presented': 'superb' Welsh lamb and venison were enjoyed this year. The hotel has a private stretch of the trout- and salmon-laden river (fishing courses arranged). The self-service breakfast has 'kippers, much to my delight'. 'Good walks from the hotel door.' 'For the brave, there is free use of a tandem.' Children are welcomed. (Jonathan and Sandra Mundy, and others)
