Knocklayd

Review

'Elegant and smart', Susan and Jonathan Cardale's 'delightful' small guest house stands at the highest point in Kingswear village, and has panoramic views over the estuary to Dartmouth. All the bedrooms have the views: they are 'stylish', well appointed; there are fluffy towels and abundant hot water in the bathrooms, and 'an excellent shower'. On cold days, guests can sit by an Edwardian fireplace in the sitting room. The Garden Room (with TV/DVD) has French windows on to the lawn, and a huge picture window facing the river. Mrs Cardale, a Cordon Bleu cook, will provide an evening meal by arrangement: 'We enjoyed a fishy feast.' Breakfast, taken at a table with white linen and silverware, has fruit, 'excellent' coffee, full English, smoked haddock or French toast with maple syrup. The Cardales' dog Molly, a bichon frise, is a retired hearing dog for the deaf. Visiting canines are welcomed; they are encouraged to sleep in the 'doggie dormitory' (the utility room) or by the Aga in the kitchen. (S and PW)
