Review

'We arrived at 11 pm and were welcomed as if it were 4 pm. Our room was perfect, with a carafe of whisky by the bed - just what we needed to recover.' Typical warm praise for Jim and Hilary McFadyen who, without staff, run this small guest house, the only dwelling in the 'stunning' scenery of the Salachan Glen. Up a 'challenging' one-and-a-half-mile forestry track, it is a 'handsome, well-maintained' building inside and out. There is a log-burning stove in the comfortable lounge. Bedrooms, though not large, are 'warmly furnished', and have 'thick mattress, gorgeous soft pillows and duvet'. Bathrooms have a power shower (one also has a bath). Dinner is communally served, a daily-changing menu of three courses, each with three alternatives (including vegetarian). Hilary McFadyen is a 'superb' cook. A complimentary glass or two of 'very drinkable' wine is offered (no licence; guests may bring their own). 'If it can be made on the premises it is', including the cake with your tea on arrival, the breads, chutneys, jams and ice creams. 'Eggs, bacon, sausages and black pudding' for breakfast were 'heartbreakingly delicious', and there are 'unusual cereals and two kinds of marmalade'. Golden eagles and deer have been seen nearby. (Ann Duncan, and many others)
