'An exceptional hotel, well maintained throughout, with very nice gardens and comfortable bedrooms.' 'Well up to standard (high).' More praise this year for this luxury hotel (Relais & Châteaux) managed by Charles Lötter for the Red Carnation group. 'The service was outstanding from all staff; they were friendly and helpful.' In large grounds in a pretty Dorset village, the house was built as a retreat for the earls of Ilchester; it was enlarged in 1893 by Thomas Hardy. One of his original rooms is now a suite with an open fireplace, rich fabrics and antiques. The chef, Steven Titman, serves modern British dishes with French influences, eg, trio of foie gras with Yorkshire rhubarb, warm brioche; roast loin of Dorset lamb, braised shoulder shepherd's pie, savoy cabbage. One visitor encountered 'occasional confusion' in the elegant dining room, from a staff member with little English. The spa has a 'very good' swimming pool, aromatherapy and reflexology. 'Not cheap but good value,' and 'Will return when feeling wealthier,' are two comments. Red Carnation also owns the less expensive Acorn Inn in the village, and the little local shop.
