The Griffin Inn

Review

'A pub, but also a civilised place to spend a night or two.' Owned by the Pullan family, this 16th-century Grade II listed coaching inn, with its beams, horse brasses and 'homely bedrooms', is in a pretty village overlooking the Ouse valley. 'The staff are friendly, helpful, if sometimes a little disorganised, which probably comes from being busy.' Meals are served in the panelled bar (with its own menu) and the 'very good' restaurant. Chef Andrew Billings uses local produce (fresh fish from Rye) for his daily-changing menu, which might include grilled rock oysters, Cashel Blue cheese; monkfish, butter beans, pancetta. 'Excellent' sprats were enjoyed this year. Five of the bedrooms are in Griffin House next door: 'Ours was spacious and comfortable; bathroom done out in modern retro style (plentiful hot water).' Four 'quirky' rooms are in the main building; others (with four-poster) in a renovated coach house where 'best use possible has been made of the space available'. The Pullans have improved lighting in all rooms this year. The wine list is 'extensive and interesting'. Children are welcomed: there is a large rear garden (with a 'stunning outlook'), and a 'healthy' children's menu. Four golf courses are nearby, and The Griffin has its own cricket team. (Richard and Catriona Smith, and others)
