Edenshead Stables

Review

'Delightful' owners Gill and John Donald have turned derelict pink stone stables on the edge of a village into this modern 'luxury B&B'. Set in wooded grounds, it has fine views of the Lomond hills, and the River Eden borders its garden. The 'air of relaxed comfort' is admired, as is the 'good value'. 'It's a bit of an Aladdin's cave,' wrote a visitor who 'really enjoyed' his visit. 'Far bigger inside than you'd expect.' The 'immaculate' interior is filled with 'beautiful furnishings, lovely paintings'. The dining room is 'elegant' and 'formal', and the large, comfortable sitting room, leading on to a patio, contains books, maps and local information. The bedrooms, one with a four-poster, have an 'upmarket' bathroom with an 'excellent' shower. Guests sit round one big table for breakfast, served 7.45-8.45 am (earlier by arrangement). It includes local kippers, Arbroath smokies, oatmeal porridge, black pudding, home-made preserves. Dinner (three courses) can be arranged for groups of four to six. Bring your own wine (free corkage). There are pubs and restaurants to 'suit all pockets' nearby. The single-storey house is suitable for physically disabled guests, but not wheelchair-bound ones. Many golf courses are nearby. No visiting dogs, but look out for the owners' two Hungarian vizslas, Rosa and Zeta. (John and Annette Kinsella, JH)
