On a working farm that has won awards for its green policies, this 'impeccable' white-painted Georgian B&B is run 'on very personal lines' by Michael and Barbara Williams. In deepest countryside, the house is 'quiet and tranquil'. 'It makes reasonable lodging within easy reach of Edinburgh (18 miles),' said one visitor, recommending the park and ride facility. The house is 'full of character': the drawing room is 'tasteful and comfortable', with coral walls, chintz sofas, an open fire, books, board games, television. Wi-Fi is now available. The bedrooms are spacious, with matching curtains and fabrics; a tea and coffee tray, a radio, and a folder of local information; a shower over the bath in the en suite bathroom. In summer, breakfast is taken in a conservatory; Mrs Williams uses farm and local produce; hot dishes are cooked to order. Mr Williams runs the farm with a neighbour on ecological lines, seeking 'to unite wildlife and landscape conservation with profitable modern agriculture'. No evening meal; there are two pubs in Gifford, a mile away. 'Unlimited' golf courses are within ten miles. (JR)
