'A wonderful waterside retreat', this old mill stands where the Dart estuary is at its widest: 'The only sound is of the lapping river and birdsong.' It has been sympathetically converted, using natural materials (slate and stone), by Robert and Kate Chaston, the 'warmly welcoming' owners. Three of the bedrooms have 'spellbinding' views of the river. 'Kingfisher has a huge bed with sumptuous bedlinen, two stylish chairs by the windows; off-white carpet, aquamarine curtains, fresh flowers; glorious views, too, from the oversized bath tub; a large walk-in shower. Good lighting.' Breakfast in the River Room (wisteria wallpaper, 'beautiful' furnishings) is a 'relaxed affair; delicious house apple juice, excellent fruit salad, home-baked croissants, yogurts and cereals, home-made marmalade and jam. The cooked selection includes kippers and scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.' The hot dish of the day might be eggs Benedict. Greenway House and gardens, Agatha Christie's home now owned by the National Trust, is close by (a 20-minute walk, an advantage as car parking is restricted). (Wendy Ashworth)
