'First class. Excellent service. Good value. We were made most welcome,' says a visitor in 2009 to this inexpensive B&B. The Georgian Grade II listed building, once the village store and bakery, is near the Goodwood estate and within easy reach of Chichester. It is owned by 'model hosts' Patrick and Heather Birchenough. Downstairs, there are beamed ceilings, a small lounge and a breakfast room. Bedrooms are on two floors: some look across fields to the cathedral spire (and as far as the Isle of Wight on a clear day); some are suitable for a family. The shower rooms have been refitted this year. Tea/coffee-making facilities are available, with fresh milk. Wi-Fi is available free of charge. Breakfast has fresh fruit salad, yogurts, muesli, home-made jams; award-winning sausages, local free-range eggs; American pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. There is a pub, The Anglesey Arms, for evening meals, almost opposite, and the Birchenoughs are 'helpful about other places to eat and details of walks'; they offer a laundry service and will make a packed lunch. Plenty of interesting sightseeing: Arundel, Petworth, Uppark, Fishbourne Roman palace; walks through woods to the South Downs. The village name is pronounced 'Hannaka'. (David Voller, AJWH)
