Set peacefully amid 'idyllic' scenery outside a village in the Hope valley (within the Peak District national park), this extended barn and cottage conversion, now a B&B, provides 'amazing value'. The owners, Vivienne Taylor ('delightful, warm') and her husband, Philip, will provide maps and packed lunches for walkers. 'Their generous hospitality never failed. Each afternoon, when we returned from walking, we were greeted with a tray of tea and cakes, and our waterproofs were taken away to be dried.' All the bedrooms have tea/coffee-making equipment, hairdryer, TV with DVD- and CD-player. 'Our small room had lots of patterns, views on both sides of fields with sheep, everything one could want, even bathrobes (nice lightweight ones); small bathroom with a bath; a comprehensive information pack.' The 'superb' breakfast is taken around a large oak table in the flagstoned hall. Lots of choice: jugs of orange juice, eight types of home-made jam, own-recipe muesli, fresh and dried fruits from the buffet; porridge and croissants from the Aga; home-made bread, local oatcakes, sausages and black pudding from the Hope butcher. Drinks are served in a large lounge with a log fire, or on a terrace; recommendations are given on local eating places. (HP, and others)
