In large grounds on the shores of Loch Scridain, Laurence and Katie Mackay run their Victorian home on house-party lines. 'They are perfect hosts,' says an enthusiastic report. He is 'charming', 'quietly efficient, arranging drinks, introducing guests to each other before dinner', and 'a mine of local information'. She runs the kitchen, preparing 'wonderful' dinners for the candlelit dining room or vine-draped conservatory. Many ingredients for the three-course menu (three options each, order by 6 pm) come from her newly created organic kitchen garden. Aga-cooked dishes include venison and duck terrine; sea bass with red onion, herb, garlic and tomato sauce vierge. 'Starters and puddings particularly delicious.' Each bedroom is different: 'Ours, spacious, peaceful, had wonderful views.' The front porch has a 'friendly clutter of useful things - sticks, fishing nets, binoculars, etc'. Both sitting rooms 'continue the country house theme, with comfortable chairs, books, magazines and log fire'; one has a polished wooden floor. Breakfast includes home-made muesli, breads, marmalade and preserves, and free-range eggs. Children are welcomed: under-14s have an early supper. A burn with waterfalls runs through the secluded gardens which lead to a private beach; otters, red deer and eagles can be seen. 'Mobile phones don't work well here.' (CHH, Anthony Bradbury)
