'Best service I experienced on my trip,' says a visitor this year to this handsome, white-painted 1930s building in a 'wonderful location' on the coast road, close to the Armadale ferry. It has been renovated by Anne Gracie and Kenneth Gunn; they are 'much in evidence, hands on, greeting guests, making small talk, waiting at table'. The interior is decorated in 'strong, but not intimidating' colours, and the drawing room has a log fire and comfortable seating. Modern Scottish cooking (eg, sauté of Atlantic halibut and globe artichoke), served in the 'pleasing' dining room (now without muzak), was widely commended, though one guest found it 'fussily presented'. Rooms vary: 'Ours was small but comfortable, with a view.' 'Ours faced the car park; nicely decorated, it had effective reading lights, armchairs, good fabrics; spotless, compact bathroom.' New this year is a varied à la carte breakfast menu, including oatmeal porridge served with 'a wee dram', kippers, and Stornoway black pudding. Kenneth Gunn was formerly captain of a cruise ship and Toravaig guests can take trips on his 42-foot yacht, or even get married on it, 'a most wonderful and memorable experience' for one couple this year.
