Lyzzick Hall

Review

In 'small but pretty' grounds in a 'glorious' position on the lower slopes of Skiddaw, this former gentleman's residence is run as a hotel by the Fernandez and Lake families. It is recommended by a regular Guide reader for the 'charm of the owners and the attentiveness of the staff'. The manager is David Lake, son-in-law of the 'genial' Alfredo Fernandez. 'We were helped with luggage to our comfortable bedroom; decorated in neutral colours, clean; towels were provided daily for the swimming pool.' Soundproofing 'might not be perfect'. The daily-changing menu reflects Mr Fernandez's heritage 'fusing traditional English with a decidedly Spanish accent: we enjoyed black pudding and chorizo with Puy lentil salad; braised ox cheek; Eton mess. The wine waiter's recommendations were good. We were impressed that a full menu was available when we ate early before a theatre visit.' Background music 'was not too intrusive'. (Sara Hollowell)
